Welcome to Butterflies of America, a website devoted to the study and enjoyment of American butterflies. Currently, we show 50,000 photographs of over 3100 species from North and Central America, and these numbers are growing every day.
Our aim is to develop a comprehensive online resource that will include information on taxonomy and identification, distribution and habitat, life history and bibliography for all butterfly taxa in America, including species, subspecies and undescribed geographic variants. At this time, we cover taxa from Alaska and arctic Canada through Panama, Hawaii, and almost all Caribbean Islands, but the image collection is by no means complete.
This ambitious long-term project largely depends on users for feedback and growth. We are always seeking to add images to existing photo collections, even for taxa already well documented. If you have photos of pinned or live adults and immatures, or larval foodplants and habitats, please submit them to be displayed with your copyright together with other images we feature! All contributions are greatly appreciated as they will help users to identify butterflies and to understand their variation!
Learn more about the website's features and meet the authors and advisors by visiting the Introduction Page, or visit the Interactive Species List and photo archive.
Note: This website is a constant work in progress. We try our best to provide the most accurate information available to us, however, errors inevitably creep in and are the responsibility of the authors, not advisors or photo contributors. If you suspect that some identifications are not correct, please contact one of the authors.
Most photographs of specimens (except type specimens) have been digitally edited to eliminate imperfections that detract from the features important for identification and visual enjoyment of images.
