The Butterflies of America website displays thousands of images by hundreds of contributors. Butterflies of America does not claim ownership of most of these images. Contributors own the copyright to images they submitted. By allowing us to display images on the Butterflies of America website, the copyright holder grants the Butterflies of America Foundation (BOAF) a world-wide, nonexclusive, royalty-free license to display, use, and reproduce these images on this website only, and in a format decided upon by the BOAF Board of Directors. Above all, BOAF values the property of others. If you believe that your work has been used on the BOA website in a way that constitutes copyright infringement, please contact us to correct the oversight.
Many images are contributed by the Butterflies of America authors, who have special responsibilities. Display of images on BOA is similar to publishing them in print. While the authors retain ownership of digital copies and originals for images they have chosen to display on BOA and thus are free to use them for any purpose, they donate the images formatted for BOA display to BOAF in order to ensure the well-being and perpetuity of the organization.
BOAF is not in a position to review the details of and differences in copyright requirements of individual photographers. Any requests about any usage of the image, except for your own personal study, should be addressed to the copyright holder named at the bottom of each image or in the image caption. Such requests may include but are not limited to: publication in a scientific paper or book, display on any other website, or "hotlinking" to an image. You are free, however, to include a link to the BOA webpage the image appears on, but not a link to the image itself (="hotlink"). Some of the links on the BOA website may lead to websites not controlled by or affiliated with BOAF. In addition, other websites may link to the BOA website. We have not necessarily reviewed these websites and are not responsible for their content and policies.
All other content of the BOA website, except the images, citations and texts by the contributors who are not BOA authors, is exclusive property of the Butterflies of America Foundation and is protected by the United States and international copyright laws. For instance, such content includes website design, logos, graphics, data compilations, html code, scripts and our software.
While images featured on BOA may be extremely useful in taxonomic and systematic studies, we urge researchers not to rely solely upon images and captions featured on BOA for formal research, but to make every effort to examine the actual specimens and labels.
Finally, while we believe that BOA webpages present true and accurate information, neither the authors, nor BOAF directors, officers, advisors, or employees can accept any legal responsibility for any errors or omissions. The Butterflies of America Foundation makes no warranty, expressed or implied, with respect to the material displayed on BOA webpages, but invites and values your input and corrections.
