Entomol.: 470, no. 117, citing Kleemann (1761), Beytr. Nat. Ins. 1: 31, pl. 3, fig. 3 ♂ D (“Westindianische”); further defined as “Surinam” by W. Comstock (1943), Am. Mus. Novit. (1229): 2.

Calhoun (1997), Holarct. Lepid. 4(1): 25-26, thoroughly discusses this taxon and determines that the “type” figured by W. Holland (1931), Butt. Book (rev. ed.): pl. 67, fig. 17, was only a “typical” example, not a true type.
