126. BOA authors 2023. The Pelham Catalogue treats Thorybes and Murgaria as genera instead of subgenera. Pelham elevated them to genera in order to maintain the widespread usage of Thorybes (while Murgaria has not been used as a valid genus since Holland for nearly a century). On the one hand, it is very much desirable to use the name Thorybes, deeply ingrained in the butterflying community. On the other hand, regarding Thorybes as a genus requires us to adopt the split classification and use genera of questionable biological significance (not readily recognizable in the field by their appearance or habitat preferences, although most likely monophyletic). A meaningful resolution of this conundrum may be for the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) to award priority to Thorybes (proposed in 1872, gaining widespread usage since then) over Cecropterus (proposed in 1869 but not used for nearly a century). If the priority is granted, the problems of nomenclature (= which names to use) will become separated from the problems of taxonomy (= to lump or to split) without restraining the freedom of taxonomic opinion. Currenly, maintaining the use of Thorybes necessitates the choice of the split classification, and the choice of the lumped classification precludes the use of Thorybes.

127. BOA authors 2023. The Pelham Catalogue treats Gesta as a subgenus of Erynnis to maintain the usage of many binomens that traditionally included the word "Erynnis." On the one hand, it is very much desirable to maintain historically used name combinations. On the other hand, Gesta prominently differs from Erynnis genetially (genomic sequences, COI barcodes) and morphologically (genitalia). Even in facies, Erynnis differs from American species formerly placed in Erynnis but closely related to Gesta by the lack of apical forewing spots. Moreover, true Erynnis is largely an Old Word genus, and Gesta is exclusively New World taxon that diversified across the two American continents. In this sense, Erynnis/Gesta pair is analogous to Lycaena/Tharsalea, Callophrys/Cyanophrys, and Pyrgus/Burnsius. We are not uniform about which treatment to choose, and some of us see value in both.

128. BOA authors 2023. The Pelham Catalogue treats Hedone and Limochores as subgenera of Polites to maintain the traditional broad usage of Polites. We are not uniform about which treatment to choose. Both sources (Pelham and the BOA list) include Wallengrenia in Polites.

129. BOA authors 2023. The Pelham Catalogue mantains Habrodais as a genus pending further studies. This is the expression of taxonomic freedom and is encouraged.
