| George T. Austin, prominent Lepidopterist and Scientific Advisor to Butterflies of America, passed away on June 30, 2009, in Gainesville, Florida. Among Lepidopterists, George is best known for his work on western North American butterflies, where he described dozens of subspecies, as well as his work on all Neotropical butterfly families, especially the skippers (Hesperiidae) and Calephelis (Riodinidae). We have assembled a partial list of George’s publications on Lepidoptera, along with some images of a few of the new species George and his collaborators described. George was one of the most prolific publishing Lepidopterists, and the impact of his loss will be felt for many years to come. |

| George began his career as an ornithologist. He is seen here birding with a friend, his sister Amalie Austin Aseltine, and George and Amalie's mother Anna T. Austin (far right). The scope mount he's using in the photo was his own creation and he said it worked very well. |
